Zerg Overview

zerg overviewWelcome to the Zerg overview! No matter if you have already decided to play them or just want to see their advantages and disadvantages, you have come to the right place.

You will find here several brief tips what to expect from the Zerg and how to play them ;)

plusvery fast unit production

pluscheap units

plusburrowing

plusunits regenerate and move faster upon Creep

plusdefensive structures can uproot and move

plusinstant transport of units via Nydus Worm

minusunits are quite weak in general

minusstructures must be built on Creep

minusDrones are lost when creating a building

Playing Zerg is probably the most difficult of the three races for StarCraft 2 beginners – so I would recommend you starting with some games as Terran or Protoss before advancing to the Zerg. The reason is that they use an entirely different building and production style than the other two races. But when you master their style, they will be very powerful in your hands.

hatchery

Zerg build all their units in a Hatchery.

Zergs don`t use several different production buildings, but produce all their units in Hatcheries - the advantage is that you can produce your entire army really quickly – which is also great for beginners. When you lose your entire army, it`s much smaller problem then losing your entire Terran or Protoss force.

The next thing to learn when playing them is the Creep - your structures (except Hatcheries) can`t be built outside of it. On the other side, your units move faster on Creep so spreading it across the map as much as possible is a great idea.

creep

Use Creep to your advantage.

When playing Zerg macro will be much more important for you than micro – establishing a strong economy and massive unit production to simply overwhelm your opponent is the key here..

Protoss Overview

protoss overviewEn Taro Tassadar, brave Protoss warrior! Have you finally decided to choose them as your main race? Or just want to hear about their playing style and advantages to make the right decision?

My goal is to provide you with an quick overview what the Protoss race can offer you – let`s start! ;)

pluspowerful units

plusProbe can build multiple structures at once

plusPlasma Shields regenerate

plusWarpgate can warp units into the psionic matrix anywhere on the map

plusPhoton Cannons can attack both ground and air and are also detectors

pluseffective spells

minusexpensive and long build times

minusbuildings must be placed inside psionic matrix (and go offline when the matrix is removed)

minusPlasma Shields are destroyed quite fast and Protoss are unable to heal their hit points

minusheavy vespene consumption

Protoss offer you several aspects that will make your playing much easier compared to the other races – for example you can manage all your building actions with just one probe and then return to mining with it. Or the Cannon – an universal defense which is not expensive and can also serve as a detector. Controlling strong and durable Protoss units is also easier than vulnerable Terran forces or large Zerg armies.

probe building

Probes can start building multiple structures at once.

In StarCraft 1, the Protoss were called "the countering race" – simply because it was absolutely necessary to know what your opponent is doing to get the right tech and defend yourself. It`s really not that hard in StarCraft 2 but you have to be still very careful to spot some dangerous units like Marauders or Roaches on time.

In most of the games you will probably rely on a combination of Zealots, Stalkers and Immortals / Colossi / High Templar, depending on the unit mix your opponent is using. But Protoss also offer a lot of interesting and funny strategies that can be actually very effective – for example aerial builds with Void Rays and Phoenixes, Dark Templar rush or even Mothership tactics!

phoenix and void rays

You can use a lot of tricky strategies when playing Protoss.
